Energie-Cités and Solar Impulse: energies for the future
As of July, the Royal Salt Works of Arc-et-Senans (France), in liaison with Energie-Cités and Solvay, will be hosting an exhibition dedicated to Solar Impulse, the solar airplane project led by the Swiss Bertrand Piccard’s team.
This scientific and human adventure is also an invitation to carry out a general reflection on our energy future. Energie-Cités intends to contribute to such a reflection with five panels inspired by the IMAGINE exhibition, with the support of the regional branch of the French national environment and energy management agency, ADEME Franche-Comté.

Like Bertrand Piccard in the field of aviation, other visionaries throughout Europe have already embarked on the adventure of imagining energies for the future. In one of the exhibition rooms, you will find European cities and regions, members of Energie-Cités, where such visions are becoming reality: Brno (CZ), Freiburg (D), Franche-Comté (F), Odense (DK), London-Sutton (GB) and Växjö (S).
It is following the success of the “IMAGINE – Beacon regions, cities, neighbourhoods” exhibition – currently available in 9 languages, that Energie-Cités was invited by the Royal Salt Works to prolong the permanent Solar Impulse exhibition by linking this revolutionary project to IMAGINE, thus contributing to the reflection on the relation between energy and territories.
The aim of the Solar Impulse project is to fly an airplane propelled uniquely by solar energy. The huge 80 m wingspan one-seater airplane is to fly round the earth without fuel or pollution, propelling itself solely by means of the energy collected by the 250m² solar array. The “round the world” mission is to take off in 2011/2012.
