By Alix Bolle | 931 visits
Across Europe, a growing number of local authorities are eager to regain control over energy systems on a wide range of scales and modalities. Through an exploratory study authored by Andreas Rüdinger and funded by the French Agency for Energy Management (ADEME), Energy Cities decided to shed light on the various nuances surrounding this phenomenon of local reclaim over energy systems and offer new perspectives to cities wishing to replicate successful initiatives. This European overview focuses mainly on three countries: Germany, which could almost be described as the cradle of remunicipalisation, the United Kingdom and France.

A whiff of pure air: what measures can reduce traffic in cities?
By Bénédicte Weber | 542 visits
The high pollution levels that hit Europe in January brought home the importance of promoting less polluting modes of transport and redesigning traffic flows to reduce congestion. Some cities have tackled the problem by implementing traffic-regulating schemes. Cities have a major part to play but asthe mayors of 20 European cities reminded the COP21 audience in Paris, measures also have to be taken at the European level, for example by tightening up the overly lax European standards on NOx emissions. Urban charging schemes

By Béatrice Alcaraz | 498 visits
For cities and metropolitan areas, embarking on a 100% renewable energy path involves changing scale and supporting the development of renewable energy production in their own and surrounding areas. This support requires new tools. Capital contributions to renewable energy production projects enable the local authority to improve project viability by increasing the amount of equity, depending on the investment resources available to it.

100%RES - Recommendation 2 : Creating new urban-rural partnerships
By Béatrice Alcaraz | 610 visits
Local governments want to get involved and participate in the economic development of their area together with new, game-changing stakeholders, cooperatives and smaller businesses. Rural communities with sufficient resources (forest, wind, agricultural waste, etc.) and space will be able to produce energy, as they already produce food, and “export” their surpluses (electricity, biogas, wood, etc.) to energy intensive urban areas with insufficient resources to meet all their needs.

Energy Cities presents a brighter, local State of the Energy Union !
By Alix Bolle | 1007 visits
The Energy Union should be an opportunity to accelerate the energy transition and define a new set of roles, rights and responsibilities for the new players who are at the forefront of it. Instead, the project is mostly focused on creating a giant supergrid of interconnected national energy markets, forcing almost all kinds of renewable energy projects to compete along the same rules. As the Commissioner in charge makes his presentation of the “state of the energy union”, Energy Cities decided to provide an alternative picture of how the energy transition has progressed at local level across the five pillars of the Energy Union: decarbonisation, energy efficiency, the internal market, energy security and research and innovation. For each of these pillars, the paper points to recommendations on how European competition and energy legislation could be improved to sustain the momentum.
